Action Learning Systems

Action Learning Systems is a educational consulting company that helps schools and districts focus on student reform and achievement. Located in California, the firm offers research-based strategy instruction, data-driven decision making, targeted professional development, standards-aligned materials, assessments, interventions, and research-based instructional strategies for K–12 districts nationwide.

As a coordinator for the assessments and benchmark division of Action Learning Systems, I was responsible for an array of responsibilities. During my time there I did the following:

  • Maintained and expanded client base through careful organization and timely delivery of the benchmark assessment to over a hundred K-12 schools

  • Created over 100 client price quotes for our school and district clients

  • Developed 100 Language Arts writing rubrics for teachers to use to score essays and measure improvement with the Language Arts coordinators

  • Created over 200 Social Science benchmark assessments to be used in thousands of schools across America

  • With the benchmark team, we developed, printed, shipped, and scored over 120,000 benchmarks for each student in the Detroit Public School district for two rounds of testing

  • Sent over a thousand benchmark assessments out to clients throughout the school year

Opening Doors Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that empowers refugees, immigrants, human trafficking survivors, and underserved Sacramento area residents to achieve self-sufficiency by accessing opportunities to mainstream economic and social systems. This is accomplished through providing safe places, skills development, business loans, and connections to community resources, assisting our clients to build financial and personal assets while maintaining their cultural identity and individual goals.

As the Community Outreach Intern, I worked in the Sacramento community to promote the Opening Doors refugee settlement programs and recruit community organizations and individuals to partner with newly arrived refugees in their transition to America. I created contacts with over 20 different community groups and religious organizations in the Sacramento area as well as a comprehensive database of hundreds of potential groups.

I also helped more than ten refugee families and individuals move into their new homes and navigate the educational, governmental, employment, and health services of Sacramento. It was a rewarding and eye-opening experience for me to learn about the frustrations and challenges that people from other countries face every day into their resettlement to America.

SIAS International University and Fort Hays State University

Sias International University is the first solely American-owned university in Central China. It is the first full-time undergraduate university approved by the Degree Committee of the State Council in China to grant both Chinese and American Bachelor’s Degrees from Fort Hays State University. Combining Chinese and Western educational philosophies, Sias aims to develop sophisticated and specialized talents that can make contributions to the modernization and economic development of China.

As a Sophomore English Instructor, I taught 250 Chinese finance majors vocabulary, functions, idioms, pronunciation, and public speaking. I prepared lesson plans, activities, and assessments. Using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), I assessed the English levels at the beginning and end of the year. Over 80% of students had a level or more improvement.

The following year I became a lecturer for Fort Hays State University’s dual degree program at SIAS. In the Fall, I received a grant to develop the Listening and Speaking and Introduction to Business English courses for the Global Business English department.

I was also voted by students as Best Foreign Instructor in the International Education Department. As a lecturer, I improved their business English vocabulary by over 200 new words and taught how to create a business proposal and marketing plan. Employed Western and Eastern teaching practices to effectively teach and manage over 200 Sophomores and Juniors.

World Academy for the Future of Women

The World Academy for the Future of Women is committed to acquiring skills and confidence to develop as campus, community, national, or global leaders. The purpose  of the Academy is to promote and accelerate the advancement of women worldwide. The mission is to engage women in discovering their purpose and passion in life and to inspire, inform, and instruct them in finding their path to success. The Academy was formed to promote and accelerate the advancement of women worldwide, training women University students to address the UN Development Goals in emerging nations.

As a World Academy faculty mentor and program coordinator, I was involved in the financial tracking and budgeting systems for the organization and the 20 programs in China.

Each program is aligned with the UN Millennium Development Goals and focused on education, alleviating poverty, gender equality, AIDS awareness and health education, and much more.

Working with the dedicated students who were passionate about bringing about change in their communities, country, and the world never ceased to inspire me.
